Cumin is a flowering plant, related to parsley, that is native to the eastern Mediterranean and South Asia. The small fruit of the plant contains a single seed, which has eight ridges with oil canals. The seeds look similar to caraway seeds due to their oblong shape and yellow/brown color.
There are many medicinal and culinary uses for cumin seeds. They are valued in Ayurvedic medicine as a helpful digestive support, often brewed into a healing drink. It is used among herbalists for its carminative properties.
Cumin is often used to flavour breads, bean dishes, sausages, soups, stews, and pickling spice blends. It can also be used as a tincture or brewed into a tea.
